Club History  

The Kiwanis Club of Germantown was formed on November 1, 1963. The Kiwanis Clubs of East Memphis and Memphis were the sponsoring clubs. Charter Night was held on Wednesday, December 11, 1963 at the Colonial Country Club. The Club’s first president was attorney Bruce Law. The only charter member currently in the club is Boyd Maize.

The Club is one of ten Kiwanis clubs in the Memphis Area (Division 1C), and is second in size only to the Memphis Club. The Club is currently growing and approaching 70 in membership.

The Club membership has included a number of lieutenant governors, including current members Norman Stringer, Bill Austin, Frank Hadaway, E. Sewell Dunkin, Bob Nichols, Russ Adsit, David Pickler, and Allyson Avera will be the 2007-08 Lieutenant Governor.

The Club’s community projects include financial assistance to the Germantown Library, the Germantown Children’s Theater, the Scouts Program, LeBonhuer Children’s Hospitals, the Commission On Missing and Exploited Children (COMEC), Sponsored Youth Scholarships and Club-sponsored Key Clubs and Builders Clubs. The Club sponsors the Germantown and Briarcrest High School Key Clubs and Germantown Middle School, and Riverdale Elementary School Builders Clubs. The Club sponsors highly successful Terrific Kids programs at Germantown Elementary School and Madonna Learning Center. Several club members participate in the Imagination Destination Program.

The Club’s Fund Raising projects include the Germantown Young Artists Concert, Pancake Breakfast Day, Peanut Sales Day, the Germantown Festival, Fourth of July Activities and a successful Golf Tournament.

The weekly club meeting consists of an excellent buffet breakfast, good fellowship, and entertaining and informative, programs. One of the club highlights is the annual Club December Holiday Party in which members spouses participate.
